Vitamin D Deficiency
If you shun the sun, suffer from milk allergies, or adhere to a strict vegan diet, you may be at risk for vitamin D deficiency. Known as the sunshine vitamin, vitamin D is produced by the body in response to skin being exposed to sunlight. It is also occurs naturally in a few foods -- including some fish, fish liver oils, and egg yolks -- and in fortified dairy and grain products.
Vitamin D is essential for strong bones, because it helps the body use calcium from the diet. Traditionally, vitamin D deficiency has been associated with rickets, a disease in which the bone tissue doesn't properly mineralize, leading to soft bones and skeletal deformities. But increasingly, research is revealing the importance of vitamin D in protecting against a host of health problems.
Symptoms and Health Risks of Vitamin D Deficiency
Symptoms of bone pain and muscle weakness can mean you have a vitamin D deficiency. However, for many people, the symptoms are subtle. Yet, even without symptoms, too little vitamin D can pose health risks. Low blood levels of the vitamin have been associated with the following:
- Increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease
- Cognitive impairment in older adults
- Severe asthma in children
- Cancer
Research suggests that vitamin D could play a role in the prevention and treatment of a number of different conditions, including type1 and type 2 diabetes, hypertension, glucose intolerance, and multiple sclerosis.
Being someone that tries to stay out of the sun, I take vitamin D to help supplement. For me, I have noticed that it helps with my mood and overall well being. When I am diligently taking it, I feel really strong and alert. This is something that I prefer to take in the winter.
Vitamin D is so important and it's concerning to hear how serious the effects of low levels of vitamin D can be. I've read a lot of people are deficient in vitamin D and don't even know it. I also think it's interesting to consider how covid keeping people inside much more may have caused deficiencies that went undetected. Personally I take vitamin D every day to ensure I always have a healthy level of it within my system, especially because I know I don't usually spend significant amounts of time outside.
I went to the doctors one day to just get blood drawn for testing and the results came back and I was deficient in vitamin D and I was shocked because I am that kind of person who is outside 24/7 in the summer literally soaking up the sun which is vitamin D so when I told my doctor that she said people with more of a darker skin complexion usually do not soak up vitamin D from the sun easily no matter how much you are outside the main way for me to get the vitamin nutrients if through food and of course I hate vegetables and any food that had a large amount of vitamin D.
@marlimartiniectskin-com yes i agree, I was very deficient in vitamin D and I was feeling so slow and sluggish but once I started taking vitamin D orally I started to feel so much better and definitely like you said just more alert. Its super important that people get blood work every so often just to check those really important vitamin levels in their body.
@marlimartiniectskin-com that's awesome you take vitamin D pills! My blood work actually showed at my last doctors visit that I was extremely deficient and I was prescribed a higher dose then what can be bought over the counter.
Lauren, What are your thoughts on this article?
I was very low in Vitamin D a few years ago and had to use prescription Vitamin D for months. Now I continue using O/C Vitamin D on the advise of my Doctor

I am one who can stay out in the sun for too long however I have recently gotten blood work and have been told i need to be taking a Vitamin D supplement. Since then i have been taking one evry day and to be honest i cant say i have noticed a different like Marli stated above, probably because i take it amongst a plathora of other things but Im interested to see if levels look better next time!
I didnt realise a deficiency in Vitamin D could be so detrimental to your overall well being.
i also knew that vitamin D was very important and it could be consumed different ways, but i never knew that it could cause so many health problems and even risk of death if you're lacking this essential vitamin.
i think i will be taking vitamin D supplements from now on.

I dont really like fish or eggs so my vitamin D has to come from the sun. I am outside alot so i definetly have a good amount of vitamin D in me.
@keyonnastarksiectskin-com I didnt know that it could cause a bunch of health issues also.
@gabriellemrasiectskin-com I didnt know people with a darker complection dont receive as much vitamin D as others. Im not dark so hopefully i recieve alot of it.
I know it's not great to be deficient in any vitamins, but I definitely didn't realize a vitamin D deficiency could be severe enough to affect your bones or cause cancer! Now I want to get my vitamin levels checked.
@keyonnastarksiectskin-com It's definitely crazy to me that you could possibly die from a vitamin deficiency.
@marlimartiniectskin-com That's amazing that you can tell such a big difference whenever you take your vitamin D supplement. The fact that a vitamin deficiency could be affecting your mood makes sense to me, but I had never really thought about it before.
I did not know that not having enough vitamin D can affect your body so bad. I need to get my vitamin levels checked out.
@abigailcochraneiectskin-com I need to start taking vitamin D supplements more often too.
@deborahwatersiectskin-com Ive never has a sign that my levels were low but i should get checked out.
I didn't realize that being deficient in vitamin D can cause so many health risks. I suffer from dairy intolerance so I try and avoid it as much as I can. After looking into what foods contain vitamin D made me realize I may need to get checked for low vitamin D levels, or start taking supplements.
@gabriellemrasiectskin-com I tend to feel pretty sluggish most of the time and my mood can be all over the place. I need to get my levels checked to see if it is because I am lacking Vitamin D or if it is something else.
@delaneyhiggonsiectskin-com I'm sure covid affected many peoples levels of vitamins in general, but especially vitamin D! Not being able to go out and do activities took a toll on me and I never tried to maintain eating all of my nutrients.
Ill have to try taking vitamin D supplements or getting check for low vitamin D, very informative article more people should know and look out for. So many people daily never get the vitamins and nutrients they need
