Jennifer Coolidge Reveals Allergic Reaction to 'White Lotus' Spray Tan Sent Her to the Emergency Room

By 4:41 PM PDT, September 18, 2022

Jennifer Coolidge is getting real about a health scare she suffered while filming The White Lotus. In a new interview with Allure via Entertainment Weekly, the Emmy-winning actress revealed she had to go to the emergency room after having an allergic reaction to a spray tan she got for her role in the HBO Max series.

"For The White Lotus, I didn't want to look like a big, white marshmallow on the beach in Hawaii, so I got a spray tan," Coolidge told the magazine. "I got on the plane, and I started to feel really weird. By the time I got off the flight, I had to go to the emergency room."

The incident prompted production to change her onscreen makeup routine as well, as an extra precaution.

"I think we ended up using regular makeup," she recalled. "The minute we stopped filming, I would shower. I have such a quick reaction to stuff."

"I was never someone who cared very much about ingredients," Coolidge said. "Then, I'd say the last five or six years, I started getting allergic. My eyes would always be tearing up, but it never occurred to me that it was my makeup."

Coolidge's most recent allergic reaction came ahead of the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards Monday. During her acceptance speech for her Outstanding Supporting Actress win, the 61-year-old shared that she took a lavender bath before the show, and it made her "swell up."

"I took a Lavender bath tonight, right before the show, and it made me swell up inside my dress, and I'm having a hard time speaking," Coolidge admitted, half-jokingly. "Anyway, this is so thrilling!"

Coolidge's makeup and beauty product allergy is something that will surely be taken into consideration by The White Lotus hair and makeup department as they gear up for season 2, with the show making its highly anticipated return for an all- new mystery set in Sicily.

In addition to Coolidge's win -- her first career Emmy win at that -- season 1 of the series took home 10 awards, including the Emmy for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, and a trophy for Murray Bartlett, who also won an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor for his role.

As far as who is coming back, ET has learned that outside of Coolidge, Jon Gries is the only confirmed season 1 actor slated to appear in the new episodes. Despite earning accolades for their respective roles, Connie Britton, Alexandra Daddario, Fred HechingerJake Lacy, Brittany O'Grady, Natasha RothwellSydney Sweeney, Steve Zahn and Molly Shannon are not coming back.

However, season 2 will see some big names, including Aubrey Plaza, Theo James, Haley Lu Richardson and more.

The White Lotus: Sicily premieres in October on HBO and HBO Max.

I can imagine developing allergies to different things as we age because it happened to me. When I was younger I used to not really care about whether I got sunburnt a lot. You just put some aloe on it and it'll go away eventually. When I got into my teens I used the same facewash with aloe as a main ingredient twice a day, every day. After using it for awhile I started to develop rashes on my neck and different areas on my face. After going to a dermatologist and being diagnosed with eczema, I was also told that the aloe was probably the reason I started to flare up and that I was allergic. After much trial and error I have found that aloe is not the only thing that makes me flair up, but it definitely is one of them, and I am definitely allergic.

I can't believe that she had a reaction to a lavender bath! That's so unfortunate to be allergic to one of the things that is supposed to be able to calm your skin down. I would imagine that discovering that you can randomly become allergic to things you've never been allergic to is very nerve racking. Instead of being worried about things you've never tried before, you have to worry about developing allergies to products you've been using daily and deciphering what caused your flare up when nothing has changed in your routine.

@nicoleweberiectskin-com That must be awful to be allergic to aloe! I use aloe for all of my burns, and I couldn't imagine what it would be like to use aloe on a burn and have an allergic reaction on top of my burn. What do you use to treat sunburn now that you've discovered you're allergic to aloe?

@lanajacksoniectskin-com I know right, it must be quite shocking to have never had an issue with something and then all of a sudden being allergic to it. Jennifer Coolidge must've not had a very easy day after the lavender bath she took before her appearance.

@lanajacksoniectskin-com I know it sounds kind of hard but once you get used to it it's pretty easy to deal with. I just make sure to use sunscreen consistently and when I do get sunburnt, diluting distilled white vinegar with water and dabbing it onto my skin works pretty well to help with the pain. It must be much harder for Mrs. Coolidge because she is allergic to a bunch of different makeup products! In the film industry those are a staple for sure.

It must be extremely scary to develop an allergy to something you deemed harmless, especially as an adult. Lavender is commonly used to calm down the muscles and relax someone so she probably thought nothing of it. Being allergic to your makeup may be something easily overlooked but it is actually very common, especially with eye makeup.

@nicoleweberiectskin-com I have a friend who is allergic to aloe as well and it is crazy how something commonly used to soothe the skin can cause a completely different reaction. Also how you can go your whole life without being allergic to something and suddenly develop an allergy.

@lanajacksoniectskin-com It must be extremely nerve wracking to develop an allergy to something you use on a regular basis. It can make it very hard to combat the allergy when you're used to using the product.

We can be allergic to many different ingredients even though we have used them for a long time. I knew a woman that had a tanning business. It got so that every time she did a spray tan on a client her sinuses would become inflamed and she did not feel well for a few days after. She finally started to think that the chemicals in the tanning solution may be the problem

I've always been hesitant on tanning beds and even spray machines because they don't ever seem to be fully clean. I also have very fair skin so I feel like if I get a spray tan it just wouldn't look right unless done professionally. I have never thought about how bad the reactions could be to these products!

@cameranriddleiectskin-com I also love using lavender in my baths. I personally use St. Ives products because they work best with my skin.

@oliviarossiectskin-com I agree. I am very loyal with the products that I use and have had to change products in the past due to negative reactions. I even was going to the dermatologist at one time because I couldn't find a solution for my skin!

There are many ingredients that cause allergic reaction. One big one is lanolin. I had a client that was tryin to eliminate ingredients to find out the culprit. Finally she stopped using a moisturizer with lanolin and he problem cleared up. This is a product she had used many years prior to the problem with her skin

Reading the ingredients in products you use is so important from bath soaks, makeup products, lotions, and more.

@oliviarossiectskin-com I agree! the fact that anyone could develop allergies to something they never used to be allergic to is scary. Being allergic to aloe and lavender is so unfortunate considering it's something that's popular and that a lot of people use religiously.

Many ingredients can cause reactions especially if your skin is sensitive, or you can develop allergies. It is also important for people that own spray tan machines to clean them properly and change the filters if they have them. It is scary to have swollen up from a lavender bath though, especially since it is supposed to calm the skin.

@camrynauxtiectskin-com I have only gotten professionally spray tanned once and it came out splotchy and I looked almost green. when I kept it on the first day it kind of made me itch, so now if I want a quick tan I just use tanning lotion since i don't have to worry about it being clean or having a reaction.

That is something I have never considered. It is scary to think that you can develop allergies as you age because I'm sure it is sometimes very difficult to figure out what is causing the flare up. Lavender is defiantly one that wouldn't be my first thought to cause an allergic reaction since its typically calming for the skin.

@oliviarossiectskin-com I have never thought about my makeup products potentially causing an allergic reaction.

@student That is scary to think that you have to worry about developing an allergy to something that you have used in routine for a long time.

I had a similar experience to this, I developed an allergy to citrus recently. More of an irritation but its weird how it can just suddenly happen. I've also become lactose intolerant, I've never really gone for dairy but its in things I like such as pizza and now it makes my stomach unbelievable uncomfortable.

@alexisdozieriectskin-com Its confusing to say the least, I've gotten allergy tests done and still can't pinpoint what makes me have reactions so I stay with the makeup and skincare that doesn't make me react and patch test. But I want to be able to pinpoint it, so far I know that citrus mostly aggravates me and hasn't in past years.

@sydneyhurdleiectskin-com I agree, reading the ingredients list is so important aswell as knowing the composition of the product. Some ingredients I have sensitivities to but aswell as formulations and what and where the ingredients are derived from.
