(Reuters) - CVS Health Corp said on Saturday it will discontinue sales the popular Zantac heartburn treatment and its own generic ranitidine products from its pharmacies after traces of a known carcinogen were found in some of the products by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The FDA said earlier this month that some of the pills contained small amounts N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), which has also been found in some widely used blood pressure medicines, leading to shortages of those drugs.

CVS said the move to suspend sales of the over-the-counter heartburn drug was taken out of caution while the FDA continues to review if low levels of NDMA in ranitidine - the active ingredient in Zantac - poses a health risk to patients.

"Zantac brand products and CVS brand ranitidine products have not been recalled, and the FDA is not recommending that patients stop taking ranitidine at this time," CVS said http://bit.ly/2lV3rNr in a statement.

Novartis AG's Sandoz unit said last week it was halting distribution of Zantac in all its markets, including the United States and Canada, following safety review of the drug by U.S. and European drug regulators.

As someone who has taken Zantac through the years I'm alarmed at hearing this news. The ingredient is also linked to some blood pressure medications and now I'm going to ask my Dr if it is in mine. Although it has not been recalled it is not being distributed in all markets. I will look for an alternative to Zantac.

Ive never taken this drug thankfully .  It reminds me of the warnings about other antacids like rolaids and tums and the high amount of aluminum they contain.  Baking soda is a good alternative .  And eating a diet high in alkalizing foods may also be beneficial.  My dad uses vinegar and says it helps with indigestion.  I prefer lemon tea and lemon water myself

Lee made a good point that there are alternatives that are natural a person can take instead of Zantac. I used baking soda a long time ago and had forgotten about it until Less mentioned it.

Safety is always a concern, so if there are traces of NDMA is zantac, and still hasn't been recalled, I would personally make a change. Long term studies haven't been done on the affect it may have on a person, so no traces are better than small traces that may lead to long term health problems.

My dr told me I should take this before and I always forget to take it but I wonder if these things are in other brands too because generic brands usually contain most of the same ingredients.

I saw this on the news! I've taken apple cider vinegar or a probiotic before a high protein meal and find that that helps with indigestion but what is this thing with baking soda though? Do you drink it?

I read Mikayl's reply and CVS has removed the Zantac and the generic form off the shelves
