What are the affects of smoking with the skin?

How would you inform your client of these affects?

How does vaping damage the cells our our bodies?

Read articles below and discuss with all your fellow students the above questions

Although E-cigarettes still contain nicotine which constricts blood flow to the skin and throughout the body causing the skin to be dehydrated and prone to wrinkling. It will also accompany the oxygen from your lungs with carbon dioxide, causing the whole body to age prematurely.

If a client asks if vaping is a good alternative to cigarettes you can inform them that the effects of the skin are the same as smoking cigarettes.

One of the most common misconceptions is that vaping is harmless or better than smoking traditional tobacco cigarettes.  The second is that vaping produces a vapor, in fact, the device actually produces an aerosol. This matters because an aerosol enables tiny particles to be suspended allowing for these agents to bind with cells in a harmful manner (a vapor reverts to liquid in its cool state and does not contain "floating" particles).

The other troubling aspect is the delivery of nicotine. Traditional tobacco has a self-limiting mechanism, the body will become ill before reaching the point of over-consumption. Vaping bypasses this and allows for hyper delivery of nicotine.

According to studies conducted by NIH, the toxic particles suspended within the heated aerosol inhibit healthy cell regeneration at the stem cell level(cytotoxic), cause chronic inflammation, and slow cellular turnover. The true harm from smoking comes from the toxic by-products from the delivery method.

Nicotine by itself is simply a vasoconstrictor, meaning it narrows the blood vessels (temporarily) which in turn can increase blood pressure and heart rate. By itself, in a healthy individual, there is much debate in the medical and research communities as to if nicotine by itself is truly harmful (and current research is being conducted on its effects on diseases).

With that being said both forms of smoking contribute to signs of aging and reduce the body's ability to heal. There are direct mechanical consequences such as lines around the mouth from the physical activity as well as longterm effects of decreased cellular turnover, decreased oxygenation, and chronic inflammation.

Smoking is a very personal choice and unless the client brings it up I would not comment unless working within a medical setting as most doctors require session in order to proceed with treatments. If a client asked I would share the information I have regarding the effects of smoking as well as encouraging them to seek out scientific data so that they can make an informed decision.

Vaping can cause the skin to become dry and flaky. It can also dry the mouth. Skincare professionals are seeing this damage on the skin by the client is thinking that vaping is ok. We can explain a few problems that may arise

Inside the body vaping can damage the lungs. The heart can also be affected.

So if vaping allows for the hyper delivery of nicotene more than cigarettes and if the delivery method binds to the cells more than cigarettes do then would vaping be more harmful than cigarettes? And does it depend on how much you are vaping? Also if a client was vaping or smoking I would not tell them about the effects unless they asked me about it because they aren't there to get a lecture but if they want to know how it affects their skin then that's when I would tell them.

Vaping can cause inflammation and cause cells that remove damaging particles, bacteria, and allergens not to work properly. In the study it shows the effects are similar to smoking cigarettes. I would say it should be treated the same as smoking cigarettes. Nicotine can cause the skin to become dehydrated and make the skin easier to damage. I would ask my client if they are aware of the affects vaping and smoking on their skin? and that I would be happy to inform them if interested so they don't feel like I am harassing them about smoking and let them ask what are the affects.

It shows in the study that vaping has similar effect as cigarette on the skin lock of oxygen might lead to skin dehydration and discoloration and loss of supple and firmness. If a client would ask if vaping is less harmful then smoking cigarette i would inform them that is just as bad on the skin and for over all health of the body.

@deborah I vaped temporarily when it came out and after I would vape constantly for some time it would hurt my chest SO bad. I would have a dry cough and dry throat and so I know it is not great for you.

Almost everyone I know has vaped or tried. My mom has been an avid smoker for years and when vaping first came out i tried to get her on the trend . Obviously with what we know now, its basically the same as smoking a cigarette, or even worse.

Warning** sad response-

One of my good friends passed about a month ago due to a completely unrelated turn of events and while he was in the ICU his lungs kept failing, he was an avid vaper. Anytime he did anything inside or out of the house he had his vape stick in his hand. His doctor said that if his lungs were stronger he probably would have pulled through. So here on out ive told anyone i know to put it down.

I remember in my junior year of high school when Juul's started becoming a big thing. I tried it one time because all my friends were and it was the WORST thing I have ever experienced in my life, it was definitely gag worthy. Its sad that people put this stuff into their lungs, and eventually get addicted to it. The school bathrooms became constantly monitored because so many people were getting caught vaping in the bathroom.

When I was in school I really didn't see people vaping, but once the pandemic started it seems like everyone does it nowadays. I have tried vaping before and I can honestly say I would never do it again. I didn't like the way it made me feel and the risk of vaping is very serious.

@keyonnastarksiectskin-com Yeah the risk of vaping is scary, I know a girl who ended up in the hospital from it.

it's so hard to quit vaping, people switch to vaping as an alternative to slow down on cigarette smoking, when in fact all it does is give the person a more easier way to smoke, since you can hide a vape anywhere and disguise the smell.

@abigailcochraneiectskin-com as someone who vapes, the vape is more addicting than cigarettes, after vaping for a long period of time, your body adjusts and craves more. I wish I would have never started, and plan on quitting at some point.

Nicotine in any form can restrict the blood vessels causing improper blood flow to organs such as the skin, resulting in dullness and other risk factors. If a client of mine was struggling with smoking/vaping I would briefly inform them on my experience vaping and quitting, if that was the route they would like to take.

@sydneyhurdleiectskin-com Exactly, vaping is smoking with easier access. Also disguised in fruity flavors that taste good versus a nasty cigarette.

@keyonnastarksiectskin-com The pandemic definitley caused a spike in vaping, we were so close to ending teen smoking around that time then vapes came out. Its sad because its also targeted at a younger crowd, they raised age laws because of how bad it was getting and it still hasnt helped.

Vaping is just as bad as smoking cigarettes. Vaping is targeted specifically to young adults and teenagers, with fruity flavors and vibrant colors that may be appealing. The target audience gets younger and younger. Vaping dehydrates the skin and could cause premature aging in the skin cells. If a client asks for advice I would advise them about the skin facts. Other than that I might reccomend they see a medical professional.

@daniellesmithiectskin-com Vaping is made to be very convenient to the user, you can smoke it inside buildings with no odor and the smoke fades away so fast. It has become a new norm for our generation, if you walk into a mall you are guarenteed to see more than one young teen vaping.

@sydneyhurdleiectskin-com When I vaped in highschool It was so easy to put in my pocket and do it in the bathroom because it doesnt smell and its so compact. It is getting more accessible for underage kids all the time.

@sydneyhurdleiectskin-com Yes Sydney I agree it is terribly easy to vape anywhere and everywhere without being caught.  I wish vaping didn't exist because I know it is awfully hard to quit.  This generation has started early, and it just takes time to find out the horrible effects .

I have commented on vaping before, but I hate it so much for all these young folk that have gotten addicted to a little device, that becomes not only  chemical addiction but a ritual.  I used to smoke cigarettes and thank goodness I never got addicted.

@daniellesmithiectskin-com I really hope that something gets done to help these young people to quit easier.  I have heard it is so difficult to quit.

Smoking in general restricts the blood vessels which causes issues such as slower healing rate, premature aging, and dullness as well as causing chronic inflammation, lung disease and many other risk factors. I just recently quit vaping and it was extremely hard to do and took many trys to completely stop. I would explain to my clients how the issues it causes inside of the body reflects onto the skin and just explain how it effected me. My skin was always so inflammed causing it to look bumpy.

@karyssamarleriectskin-com Agreed the fruity flavors are the worst. I would also inform them on how it effects the skin.

@sydneyhurdleiectskin-com Its extremely hard to quit and I think is it due to being able to smoke it anytime. I becomes more of a habit and a regular motion.
