I found this article really interesting because it talks about a newly discovered sensory organ in the skin called the nociceptive glio-neural complex. Scientists believe this organ helps the body detect mechanical pain, like pressure, pinching, or being pricked by a needle. Instead of being made like larger organs such as the heart, it is made up of glial cells that form a network between the layers of the skin and work with nerve cells to send pain signals.
What I found most fascinating is that scientists originally discovered this organ in mice. When they turned off the glial cells in the mice, the animals still reacted to heat or cold, but their response to pressure pain was reduced. This shows that this organ may play a big role in how the body senses certain types of pain. Even though it hasn’t been fully confirmed in humans yet, scientists think it most likely exists in humans too, which makes this discovery even more interesting and important for understanding how our bodies feel pain.
