Mascara kept on for decades leaves 'embedded' lumps under woman's eyelids
A woman who claims she nearly went blind after not washing her mascara off for more than two decades is warning makeup users about her "bad habit."
Theresa Lynch, 50, of Sydney, Australia, told the Daily Mail her eyes were irritated and discharging. She said she felt discomfort on the underside of her eyelids, so she made a doctor's appointment.
Lynch, who said it felt like she had some sort of buildup on her inner eyelids, learned she was suffering from conjunctival concretions, otherwise known as small calcified bumps or lesions.
"[The lumps] were embedded so deep that particles were building up on top of each other," she told the Mail. "I was so uncomfortable. My eyelids were swollen and heavy because I left it for so long."

The mother of two, formerly of Maryland, said her doctor, Daba Robaei, was shocked at the discovery and claimed she hadn't seen anything like it during the course of her career.
Robaei published a study in the American Academy of Ophthalmology confirming Lynch's condition, in which she detailed that the dark calcified bumps were found under her upper eyelids.

"Every time Theresa was blinking these bumps were rubbing on the surface of the eye and they pose a risk to her vision," Robaei told the news outlet. "If the scratch on the surface of the eye got infected, there is a risk this could be a potentially blinding but that would be rare."
Lynch said her health was in danger because she "had fallen into a bad habit of wearing a lot of makeup and not washing it off," and is warning others that it's "so important to properly take your makeup off every single night. You can't miss a single day."
This is very interesting and scary at the same time. I never knew this could happen, I always make sure I take my mascara off with eye makeup remover but I think now I am going to definitely make sure it is all off no traces left behind!
I've had clients who don't remove all their mascara and it is very hard to try to remove. I use the time to plant a seed with them about the problems this can cause. Most everyone did not even think about it
I got the bad chills reading this! I could not imagine going 2 days without taking off my makeup, let alone 25 years! I think about all of the bacteria and mites that love on my face and eyelashes and cannot understand why someone would let it accumulate so bad! I hope she learned a valuable lesson and starts walking her face and eyelashes properly.
@deborahwatersiectskin-com I have a hard time removing just a days worth of mascara at the end of they day, I wonder if she had any eyelashes left after they removed her mascara! I definitely agree that is important to talk to clients about the health hazards of not removing their makeup if it seems like they don't remove it properly.
this is terrifying to read, but unfortunately so necessary for so many people to read. I can't imagine the damage that can be caused by actually choosing to not remove your makeup. For one, it's pretty gross. But realistically, as makeup technology continues to evolve- focusing on wear longevity and "tattoo like" staywear, these products are literally just sitting, tacky, and effected with every movement of the eye, any contact with the eyeline. But for twenty-five years?! I feel like there had to be irritation way prior to 20 years of reapplication.
@noracrainiectskin-com exactly! I, personally, literally start removing my lashes and makeup in the car ride home! It just bothers my skin. I cant imagine what the irritation on her eyes would be like. OR just how damaging it could've been to her overall health.
Reading this just makes me worry and think about all the late nights I came home and just passed out without taking off my makeup. I have in the past couple years payed much more attention to it. But it makes me worry because sometimes I just wash my face a night with my cleanser and water to remove my makeup, some late nights I don't always do the makeup remover and the cleanser.
@deborahwatersiectskin-com Agreed sometimes it's difficult to just remove your days worth of mascara. Even after nights of using my makeup remover and cleanser I still wake up with little black raccoon eyes underneath.
this is so scary and i never even thought something like this could happen simply because of not completely taking off your mascara. i cant think of how many times ive been like "oh im not wearing face makeup today and i dont feel like doing my skin routine so im just going to bed." never again.
@kaytlynmolinaiectskin-com i dont use a makeup remover at all, i use baby wipes which i know is not that effective but it is better than nothing, right? i used to use micellar water and i liked it so i may start using that again
So many people do not understand the importance of washing off your makeup every night and also taking the extra time to ensure you removed it all. Many makeup wipes have difficulty removing mascara and many people may feel it's not important to get the last of it off. I think because many of us are so used to wearing makeup at all times during the day it can be easy to forget how dangerous it can become when not removed before sleeping.
I dont understand how she could keep mascara on for 25 YEARS and not think anything was gonna happen to her eyes overtime. Reading this makes me never want to wear mascara ever again.
Wow I'm confused as to why this woman thought leaving mascara on for 25 years was a great idea?! It is important to always remove your make-up because it can clog your pores, cause aging, cause eye infections and the list goes on. I think that from time to time women forget to wash off all their makeup or they get tired and wash it off the next morning... but 25 years?!
@keyonnastarksiectskin-com I agree with you I can't even believe she had any eyelashes left!
@noracrainiectskin-com I'm with you I feel sooo oily if i leave makeup on my face and don't wash it off! I look forward to coming home at the end of the day and washing my face
@laurenjohnsoniectskin-com Same! i feel like i need to at least rinse my face with water a couple times a day. After i put on makeup, give it 2 hours and im feeling oily and icky and need a towelette
I take off my mascara everynight becuase i hate the way i look when i get up the next morning. It feels clumpy and its hard to remove the next day. It crazy how the mascara embeded under her eyelids and could scratch her eye.
@laurenjohnsoniectskin-com I agree with you. How could someone just forget to remove her makeup after 25 years! Thats insane and gross.
@kaytlynmolinaiectskin-com I dont think if have to worry if u miss one night but if you get to 25 years id say yea worry!
I hate wearing mascara so I could not imagine wearing mascara for 25 years. My mom told me when I started wearing makeup to make sure I take it off at night because it could cause eye infections.
@laurenjohnsoniectskin-com I don't think that leaving your makeup on for a night is the end of the world, but I do think that you should wash it off as soon as possible.
@kaytlynmolinaiectskin-com I try to make sure I get all of my eye makeup off at night I am more lenient when it comes to my face. I never knew that makeup could become in bedded in the inner eyelids like that.
@paigebrickhouseiectskin-com im not a fan of mascara either. I rub my eyes way too much to wear mascara everyday.
That is scary. I don't wear mascara a lot but when I do I make sure I take it all off before bed! I can't imagine leaving it on for 25 years.
@keyonnastarksiectskin-com This for sure makes me wanna be more cautious about mascara
This story is so bizarre, who wouldn't want to take their makeup off, especially mascara.. considering it's your EYES! Removing your makeup is so important for your skin, everyone needs a break from makeup especially in cases like this one.
I wear strip lashes often, but when I do wear mascara I always take it off. It starts to feel so dry and heavy after a while i can't imagine leaving it on long term. She's lucky she didn't lose her sight because I can imagine this could've caused a massive infection.
@francescablackiectskin-com The ultra longwear makeup is extremely concerning to me because it subconsciously encourages people to wear their makeup for too long. Yes there should be an option for certain things like all day events and such but the regular person doesn't need an intense , long-wear foundation for everyday use. If not removed properly it will surely cause breakouts.
