Hand sanitizer brand has ‘unacceptable levels’ of cancer-causing chemicals, FDA warns
If you own a bottle of Artnaturals scent-free hand sanitizer, federal health officials want you to stop using it immediately and toss it in a hazardous waste container, not in the trash or down the drain or toilet.
U.S. Food and Drug Administration tests have found “unacceptable levels” of some cancer-causing chemicals, including benzene, acetaldehyde and acetal contaminants in some bottles, according to a warning issued Oct. 4.
The Artnaturals product has been added to a list of 260 other hand sanitizer brands contaminated with harmful chemicals that the FDA urges people not use. The sanitizers can be bought in several stores, including Walmart, Publix and Amazon.
The California-based company has not responded to “multiple FDA attempts to discuss the contaminated hand sanitizers, including identification of the manufacturer, possible recalls, and the scope of the contamination.”
The FDA says the risk of using these hand sanitizers is unknown, but research shows the chemicals they contain are known to cause cancer.
Benzene is among 20 of the most used chemicals in the U.S., commonly found in plastics, lubricants, rubbers, detergents and pesticides. Studies in both animals and people show benzene can cause cancer, particularly those in the blood.
Acetaldehyde can be found in perfumes, dyes, rubber and alcohol, among other products. Short-term exposure can irritate your eyes, skin and respiratory tract, but it can cause serious illness or death in the long-term. Studies conducted on animals suggest acetaldehyde can cause cancer in people.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends using hand sanitizers that contain at least 60% alcohol.
The FDA encourages people to report adverse reactions to hand sanitizers to its MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program.
In April, the FDA recalled eight lots of hand sanitizers made by Scentsational Soaps & Candles that were sold at certain Marshalls, TJ Maxx and Ulta Beauty stores, the Miami Herald reported. The products contained methanol, benzene and acetaldehyde.
The FDA has said methanol is “toxic” when rubbed on your skin, but it’s more damaging when ingested.
Such a scary thing to have to think about if the sanitizer you are using is safe. Sanitizer has been used for so long and is essential for killing germs that are found on our hands. It's meant to be a safe sanitary practice so to sit and think about if the ingredients can give you cancer is terrifying!
The thought of harmful ingredients being in hand sanitizer is a definite scary thought, especially in these times when we are using it the most. I remember when covid first broke out and all these random brands started making hand sanitizer. Body brands that were making lotions and body washes were now making hand sanitizer. Im not sure if it was done in a way to appeal to the fact that we as a nation were "low" on hand sanitizer or if it was to really provide a good hand sanitizing product. I am very careful about what hand sanitizer I buy and use on my hands as not all hand sanitizer is ACTUALLY sanitizing our hands.
When the pandemic first hit, every company you can think of came out with their line of hand sanitizer. I am never too brand crazy but hand sanitizer is the one thing i have to get name brand.
Ive never told anyone this- BUT- When i was in elementary school i went through this germaphobic phase where i couldnt touch a single thing without hand sanitizing. I always had a little bottle with me and i had a full pump one on my desk. It got the point that i had blisters from using too much and the layers of my skin on my hands were peeling off. I was in severe pain but i would still apply more and more. After my mom seeing how bad my hands got, she made me wear mittens with lotion to bed to help heal them. Im not sure what triggered it but i havent been like that since, nothing truly grosses me out.
Its scary to think that one of the things that can prevent bacteria from spreading and kill germs can cause cancer. When the pandemic started, there was a major shortage in sanitizers. Since that happened, companies that didn't make sanitizer before were producing them. Who knows what they were putting in the sanitizer and selling them to us.
After reading this article it has bought some fear in my eye. Hand sanitizer is something is used in everyday life especially for healthcare workers. So to hear about the recalls and possibly getting cancer from it is scary. Its even worse knowing that during the peak of covid it was something everyone was relying on not realizing it can be causing more issues.
@keyonnastarksiectskin-com Their was also of hand sanitizer shortages when the pandemic started. That makes me wonder what they were substituting some of the ingredients for to mass produce.

@abigailcochraneiectskin-com I also prefer to get brand name hand sanitizer but now im questioning the formulation of some of those other brand name companies that didnt use to create hand sanitizer that started to in the pandemic.
When buying hand sanitizer your thinking about cleaning your hands when all its doing is harming your skin.
@camiryndavisiectskin-com that scary because we used it everyday during covid and never thought to check the bottle for certain ingredients.
@abigailcochraneiectskin-com Every brand did come out with hand sanitizer. I noticed that as well. And i bet that half of them had toxic chemicals in them.
The ingredients recalled really woke me up to the problem that not all hand sanitizers were safe. I would not have even thought about it

I know and its always an issue with something we use causing cancer. The last thing I would think about Hand sanitizers was the cancer causing ingredients.

I can see where this was an issue for you. I feel like I was wiping door handles and spraying everything with disinfectant during COVID. It became an issue and I had to work hard not to over do this to the point of spraying every time I went into the kitchen or bathroom even though I was not touching the surfaces

The one thing that is supposed to kill bacteria/germs has cancer causing agents in it. Doing research on companies is something I will start doing, like the neutrogena recall because of benzene, scary.
@cameranriddleiectskin-com exactly, it makes me wonder how many times I might've come in contact with this ingredient in other hand sanitizers, and whatever else. It seems like everything nowadays is being recalled due to some type of cancer causing ingredients.
The use of hand sanitizer has always been big but when the pandemic hit people were constantly using it. it is scary to know that some of these hand sanitizers are being recalled due to harmful ingredients when it is suppose to help protect us from germs.
@keyonnastarksiectskin-com There are so many brands that make hand sanitizer now and it seems like it's starting to really become important to read the ingredients in them. I like to just stick to the name brands that I know.
@abigailcochraneiectskin-com same here I always stick to name brand hand sanitizer
I think it is ridiculous how companies are able to use these chemicals and substances that are harmful to humans. The way it is marketed to customers while being potentially fatal over time is terrifying. Especially with the demand of hand sanitizer following the pandemic. We really have to read deeply into the ingredient list and be knowledgable about what we are using since companies are selling us hazardous products.
@cameranriddleiectskin-com Really scary actually, we have to educate ourselves on the products we use since nobody else is doing it for us apparently.
@keyonnastarksiectskin-com I think it may be due to the demand of sanitizer, they just were throwing anything on the shelves rather than actually taking the time to think about what exactly they were adding into these products we use.
It's scary to think that something that is supposed to keep you safe can cause more harm than good, long term. However, it's not new to see that something that was believed to be safe can be found to cause harm. Something that comes to mind when I read articles like this one is cigarettes. For many years they were used and even prescribed by doctors to calm nerves because they were thought to be safe until science proved that wrong.
@daniellesmithiectskin-com I agree. We need to do research on the ingredients of products. Especially those products we use often but it can be hard to look up every single product we use.
