SKIN LIGHTENING CREAM CAUSES FIRST U.S. CASE OF MERCURY POISONING IN 50 YEARS, CDC SAYS
After regularly using a skin lightening cream manufactured in Mexico, a California woman was hospitalized, relying on tubal feeding and being unable to speak or care for herself.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has linked her severe central nervous system damage to organic mercury poisoning via methylmercury, an organic mercury compound that has not caused a case of poisoning in America in nearly 50 years.
Methylmercury poisoning has the potential to cause severe central nervous system damage. The woman first sought medical help for muscular weakness and involuntary muscle movement in her shoulders and arms.
Two weeks of outpatient care ensued, but her symptoms worsened: her vision became blurry, she developed difficulty speaking and her gait became unsteady. After blood and urine tests confirmed mercury poisoning, she underwent chelation therapy.
Chelation therapy treats heavy metal poisoning via chemicals administered through intravenous therapy, intended to bond with the ions of the metals within the bloodstream. Once bonded, the heavy metals can be safely excreted by the patient.
But the patient's condition worsened, and she was transferred into hospital care, where she remains.
The patient used the cream twice daily for seven years, according to her family and a case study published December 19 about her illness in the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

"Most harmful skin-lightening creams are intentionally tainted with inorganic mercury. But in this case, the patient used a skin-lightening product containing organic mercury, which is far more toxic," study senior author Dr. Paul Blanc, of California Poison Control System and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) to the Associated Press.
"Central nervous system toxicity, as in this case, is the hallmark of organic mercury—it typically comes on after weeks to months of exposure. Once manifested, it quickly progresses and often worsens, despite removal of any further exposure," Blanc continued in a news release released by UCSF related to the study. "Unfortunately, chelation therapy, which is effective in inorganic mercury poisoning, has not been established to be efficacious for methylmercury."
Consumers looking to protect themselves from harm may "purchase creams from well-known stores and avoid those with hand-made labels or without labels. Ingredients must be listed, and directions and warnings should be in English," Dr. Craig Smollin, the study's co-author and member of UCSF's emergency department, said. Smollin is also the medical director of the California Poison Control System's San Francisco Division.
I'm surprised it took so long for the poisoning to set in! Seven years! That's a long time to be applying organic mercury to your face. Hopefully they can figure out treatment for her.
Yikes. This is why its really important to research brands and skin care lines because you don't know how they process the ingredients or what's going on in the manufacturing process.
Yes Carlie
Do research on your products. All products should have an SDS sheet and you would be able to view them online. Different countries do not have the same standards so look for ingredients and know what your using
I just watched a documentary on HBO about the beauty industry products and how the ingredients in them cause issues to the endocrine system and can cause cancer and diseases. I think it's important to research the ingredients that are in your products to know what it is that you're putting on your skin because it does absorb into the body to some degree. It's pretty crazy that it took 7 years for her to get ill from this skin lightening lotion and I would have never used something with a hand written label where I didn't know what the ingredients were! All things aside I hope this woman ended up okay!
@carliecannestroiectskin-com I agree! Sadly too companies mask toxic ingredients with the name "fragrance" so you have to watch for certain words when looking.
You would think that something like this would have a reaction quicker, but it took 7 years .... 7 YEARS! You should always research a product and its ingredients before using it on your skin. You never know what you could be putting on your skin that can cause serious problems.
Seven years of using this cream and now shes just get poisened! Thats a good and bad thing. Thats just so crazy how she never got any reaction from this lotion before this.
@carliecannestroiectskin-com Its so important to research brands and what chemical are in the products.
@tabethapetersoniectskin-com Yes hopefully the find a treatment for you and shes alright.
It is absolutely astounding it took 7 years for her to get some sort of reaction from this cream! I used to never may much attention to ingredients before i came to school but now i am always reading through and researching their brand etc.
@keyonnastarksiectskin-com Youre skin gets put through so much everyday, it is crazy the amount of toxins it can withstand. We should be more diligent about researching the chemicals we are putting on our bodies.
It took a woman seven years to be hospitalized with central nervous system issues from using a skin-lightening cream that was intentionally tainted with organic mercury. Well, for one, I’m sure the woman had to have some warning signs that something was going on with her body that was not quite right. Secondly, I’m guessing that she did not research what she was putting on her skin. I always research any meds or creams I put in or on my body.
@keyonnastarksiectskin-com Yes!!! That is just what I typed in my reply. I always research meds or creams. I'm just wondering why she was still on the same cream for seven years? It obviously was not working fro her.
@tabethapetersoniectskin-com My thoughts exactly! It did take a long time to affect her. It must have had to build up in her system to see any side effects.
7 years! Thats a long time of using a whitening cream to begin with, especially with organic mercury. Definitely should research ingredients beforehand!
@abigailcochraneiectskin-com Right! Must have been doing some small internal damage all along though without feeling it.
