The Importance of Good Posture

Everyone can remember their mother correcting them with “Stand up straight!” and “Don’t slouch!” And honestly, mom was right all along- there are medical reasons why good posture is so fundamental to good health. Health Fitness Revolution did some research and here’s what we found for you.

  • Avoid Health Complications: Over time, slouching increases your chances of having a spinal disc slip, back pain, back aches, decreased blood circulation, and chest pressure. Improper posture takes a toll on muscles in your neck, shoulders, back, and hips, and leads to problems such as carpal tunnel syndrome in your wrists
  • Facilitates your Breathing: There’s a reason pilates, yoga, and meditation exercises pay so much attention to posture: because it helps you breathe! Close your eyes, slouch, and breathe. Now consciously pull your shoulders back and breathe. There should be a noticeable difference in the amount of air your lungs take in. Having good posture opens up your airways and facilitates good breathing.
  • Increases thinking power and Concentration: Our brains require 20% oxygen to functions properly. Therefore, by increasing your good posture habits, you facilitate your breathing and take in more oxygen. Oxygen is the best food for your brain and with that, you have more energy to focus and think during the day.
  • Feel Better about Yourself: If you consciously adjust your posture now, we’re sure you’ll notice a difference in how you feel. When you have good posture you naturally have more self-confidence and boosts in happiness. Try it for yourself!
  • Improves your Image: When you feel confident and happy, you portray an attractive and inviting image of yourself to others. It will give you a great first impression, whether it be the first day of school or that ideal job interview.

So stand up, look forward, pull your shoulders back and be healthy as you take on your day!

As I was reading this it made me sit up straight, and focus on my posture. Actually, it's been something that has been affecting my body. It's so easy, to be mindless, and your body adjusts to habits, and some of those habits aren't good for us. I've noticed that my posture, has had an impact on my body. I've been dealing with neck, shoulder and back pain. When I become aware of my posture, and make a few adjustments, it totally takes the pressure off and the pain goes away. It's becoming aware of our own bodies, and taking new techniques for better posture to become habits that we don't even have to think about, like breathing, it just happens.

This is everything I learned in yoga training lol but what the article doesn't mention is that if you are sitting or standing for long periods of time everyday, there's no way your core muscles can hold you up for that long and they're gonna give out. And most desks aren't designed for support. If your sitting for a long period of time make sure your back is supported by placing a pillow behind you and if you're standing, take a stretching break every two hours.

My mom noticed I was rounding my shoulders when I walked or sat. For a while I remember having to walk around my house for short periods of time with a book on my head. This might sound silly but it did improve my posture

@mikaylaalleniectskin-com Yes I always realize when I'm doing facials that my posture is horrible! Even when I'm sitting down at a table I notice i'm rounding my shoulders. Its so hard to correct bad posture though when you've been doing it for so long!

Since i've been slouching for so long my body is used to it being in that position, so when I stand or sit up straight its uncomfortable. Eventually, I got over the fact that its not the most comfortable thing, and every time I catch myself slouching I force myself to sit upright.

Posture is so important. As a small child i remember my mom, family and teachers always preaching the importance to sit up straight and walk like theres a stick up your back. When i was 10 i was diagnosed with scoliosis , and slouching was seemingly the only thing that made it feel better, but what i know now just makes it worse.

After doing facials and leaning over the client for so long my back hurts so bad. I started looking into these stools that you straddle , instead of sit directly on. They supposedly promote good posture.

In the past year I have really tried to pay attention to my posture because I always have tight upper back muscles due to slouching. It is SUCH a hard habit to break and it's uncomfortable but I try to make myself aware of how sitting and rounding my shoulders. I see many older people who have very hunched over backs and I don't want that for myself. It's also hard to remember to stand up straight and pull your shoulders back because it also feels weird but people look so much better when they walk and stand with good posture. Stretching daily is a great way to help improve posture as well.

I need to start working on my posture because I can tell even from looking in the mirror that my back kind of has that hunch to it. Sitting for me is something I have a hard time with because I cannot sit still, so im usually sitting however is comfortable to me without even noticing that i'm slouching forward. My back has been starting to hurt and cramp when doing facials and this is probably due to how im sitting and the fact that I need to start stretching as well.

I have terrible posture, I am a sloucher for sure. Fixing my posture is definitely something I need to work on because of all the benefits from having good posture has, like less back pain which I experience a lot due to constant slouching.

@sydneymissaleiectskin-com Yes! Slouching after a while causes such back pain, while doing facials it is super important to make sure you are sitting correctly so you don't start to have back pain, especially when you're working 8-9 hour days.

@gabriellemrasiectskin-com

In our industry posture is very important for longevity. Slouching and reaching too far will aggravate the back and shoulders. A good support bra is essential also

Another thing to invest in is a good support bra. You will be surprised at how much it will help with back issues. Also having massages is good to relieve stress and tightness in the muscles

I have noticed while doing the program that I have really bad posture! Recently, I have had severe back pain to the point to where I cannot turn my back. I think the importance of sitting up straight, wearing a supportive bra, and not 'hunching' over while practicing facials will help with this issue.

After reading this, I right away thought about my posture. I know that mines is bad due to the fact that I have back scoliosis. I tend to sit leaning towards the right to ease the pain in my lower back. When im in the clinic at school I try to have the best posture since being a esthetician is manual labor heavy.

@abigailcochraneiectskin-com Having a good stool that caters to your personal health issues will help with some of those possible pain being a esthetician can bring.

@deborahwatersiectskin-com I have never thought about investing in a good supportive bra for back pain. I can see why that would help tremendously with back pain though.

I have terrible posture and it really hurts my back. If I have been slouching and then fix my posture then I hear my back crack. I try to be mindful about it but I'm not the best.

@gabriellemrasiectskin-com I have constant back pain too. Especially when I am sitting in a recliner that's when my back really hurts.

@sydneymissaleiectskin-com I've noticed that when I am slouching really bad I will start to get a tingling sensation in my back. I got in a wreck when I was a kid and ever since then I've had back troubles but slouching doesn't help it.

My posture was so bad i used to have to go to a chiropractor. It would hurt to stand for a long period of time and sit straight up.

@camiryndavisiectskin-com Hopefully sitting up straight while doing facials will help me have better posture.

Having good posture is so important especially with all the benefits good posture comes with. I struggle keeping a good posture and it has led me to have horrible back pain, but it is a hard habit to break. I need to start being more aware of it.

@laurenjohnsoniectskin-com I used to stretch all the time when I dance, and since I stopped I have noticed my back pain is much worse. I need to get in the habit of stretching everyday.

@keyonnastarksiectskin-com Same here. If I sit up straight for a long time I am in so much pain. It is something that I need to be more aware of.
